Density measurement

How to effectively measure the density of mine and construction water?

Water from construction sites and excavations often contains suspended solids, sediments, and other particles that affect its density. Accurate measurement of this parameter can be crucial for dewatering processes, quality control, and pumping station management. One of our customers was looking for an alternative to a complicated system that would allow them to accurately measure the density of liquids in the range of 1 to 1.5 kg/l and transmit the data in the form of a 4...20 mA analog signal. The solution based on the JUMO DICON touch controller proved to be not only easier to configure, but also more resistant to difficult field conditions. In this article, we show how this system works and where it can be used. Read on!

How to accurately monitor the density of mine and construction water? Customer's problem

Measuring the density of liquids in difficult terrain conditions, such as construction sites or open-pit mines, can be a serious challenge. Process water from these areas often contains suspended solids and sediments that affect the density value expressed in kg/l. This was precisely the problem faced by a user who was looking for a reliable way to determine the density of liquids and transmit the measurement result as a standard 4–20 mA analog signal.

The solution used so far proved to be too complicated to use and not very intuitive, which made daily monitoring difficult. An additional problem was the need for frequent setting changes and the inability to quickly calibrate the measurement without entering the sensor's advanced configuration menu. The user expected a simpler system that would enable direct measurement of liquid density with visualization on a large, easy-to-read screen and scaling to a range of 1–1.5 kg/l.

High resistance of components to environmental conditions, precision of differential pressure measurement, and easy integration with the existing installation were the main requirements when selecting a new solution for measuring the density of mine and construction water.

How to ensure accurate measurement of water density? Our solution

To determine the density of liquids in the range of 1–1.5 kg/l, a system based on the JUMO DICON touch controller and two JUMO MAERA S29 SW level probes with a range of 0–200 mbar was used. The hydrostatic probes were placed at different depths in the tank, at a fixed distance of 1 meter, which allows the hydrostatic pressure difference – and thus the density of the liquid – to be determined precisely.

To limit the influence of flows, the sensors were mounted in steel protective tubes open at the top and bottom. The signals from both probes are fed into a mathematical function in the JUMO DICON touch controller, which calculates the difference between the values and then divides it by a constant factor (in this case 100), converting the result into kg/l. The processed value is displayed on a large color process screen and transmitted as a 4–20 mA analog signal.

The system also allows for easy calibration – analog input offsets are available at the user level, allowing the readings to be adjusted without having to go to the configuration level. The whole system is not only precise and transparent, but also convenient in everyday use.

Data flow thanks to JUMO DICON touch

How have our methods for measuring liquid density proven themselves in applications involving mine water and construction water?

The implementation of a liquid density measurement system based on JUMO DICON touch offers many advantages in field applications such as measuring the density of mine water and construction water. First and foremost, it enables precise and reliable monitoring of liquid density, which is crucial for effective management of process water and dewatering processes.

Thanks to the easy configuration and intuitive measurement of our liquid density sensor, the user can quickly determine the density value expressed in kg/l, with the option of transmitting the measurement results via a standard 4–20 mA analog signal. This allows for integration with automation and monitoring systems, ensuring constant supervision of the medium's condition.

The high resistance of the level probes to environmental conditions and the accuracy of the pressure difference measurement guarantee the stability and repeatability of the measurement results, even in demanding field conditions. As a result, liquid density measurement can be used to control the quality of excavation water, prevent problems in pumping station installations, and support decisions regarding further water treatment and purification.

In addition, the simple offset function allows calibration of the measurement without unnecessary downtime or complications, which greatly facilitates operation and minimizes the risk of measurement errors. A clear, large process display with color graphics improves the readability of measurement results and increases operator comfort.

In summary, the JUMO DICON touch system provides comprehensive support for precise measurement of the density of the tested liquid, guaranteeing reliability, ease of use, and full integration with automation systems, which is extremely important in industrial and environmental applications.
